Sea Swimming Practice at Dovercourt Promenade

The 2009 sea-swimming season has begun! Five of us tested the water on Friday 1st May. Cool, but not too bad was the overall impression. Completed the first 1500m distance swim early on Monday morning. With calm conditions it was still a tad chilly but once up to speed it is ok.

Rules for sea-swimming are: There is no safety provision!! sad If you are not able to swim the distance in cold and often choppy water don't risk it. At this time of year you will need a wetsuit and heavy duty swim hat.

We meet at the Dovercourt Promenade by the ramp. This is situated just to the Harwich side of the boating lakes, beside the oval concrete hut. The green water fountain marks the access road.

If I set a time and date for swimming it will be dependant upon. My shift-pattern, the tide and the predicted weather. If the weather is not suitable at the time, I will adjust the shedule or even cancel the swim. In most cases we can do something, but it can be a little difficult if you are not used to open water swimming.

Re: Sea Swimming Practice at Dovercourt Promenade

This weeks sea-swimming will be on Friday (15th May) at 16:00. High water is at 16:30. I expect that the swim will be around the buoys to the lighthouse and return. Around 900m. I am working for the early part of the week and competing over the weekend. If anyone else wants to set a time and date for Sat / Sun I am sure others would welcome the chance to test the water.

Can't beat a little bit of lubrication!. See you there. Bring a heavy duty swim hat if you have one, or two thin ones if not.

Re: Sea Swimming Practice at Dovercourt Promenade

Hi Dennis - hated every second in the sea last week.  The combination of the temperature and the tightness of my wet suit made it almost impossible to breathe and thought I was never going to make it back to the shore!  However, I won't be beaten by it and will join you tomorrow at 4!

Trudy - glad you managed to get you wet suit on - I will bring some plastic bags and baby oil!!

Graeme - where is PC???

CYD and GYP RIP are in PC on PL near to where the F&H used to be, ocassionally seeing a JAY scampering about.
GYP used to love it once out of the water, much to the confusion of CYD

Re: Sea Swimming Practice at Dovercourt Promenade

At the moment, I am planning to swim Monday at 1300hrs at the slope as usual. The wind will swing around to the east and may be gusting up to 23mph. The wind from the east is not very helpful but I will go and have a look to check. If okay I will swim. Anyone is welcome join me. I will stick with any less confident swimmer (if I go in).

Re: Sea Swimming Practice at Dovercourt Promenade

We had 17 swimmer in the water yesterday (Sunday) a record to date. The next time I plan to swim will be on Friday 5th @ 10:30. On Saturday 6th HW is at 11:44 , Sunday 7th it's 12:24. I will not be swimming on either of these days as I have a race on Sunday and want to be fresh. If anyone else would like to be the focal point please post something on the forum.

Re: Sea Swimming Practice at Dovercourt Promenade

Thanks Dennis, Tim, Ashley and others for making sure I didn't drown! on Sunday.
Today was the furthest I've ever continuously swam. Apart from swollowing a bit of sea water and treading water for a few seconds.

Just need to get a pair of inflatable large hands from ebay (like they have in the crowds at London Marathon) to go with my Flippers I bought in Egypt.  tongue
